YAY! I am celebrating today because my mom’s book, “Raw Motherhood: A Collection of Poems and Prose to Honor the Joy and Pain in the Journey”, just came out and is available to purchase on Amazon! This is a poetry book about motherhood with poems by over 100 people about their experiences with either being a mother, their mothers, the mothers of their mothers, or the mothers of the mothers of their mothers!

One day, my mom called me to her office and told me “I’m thinking I should make a poetry book… maybe about motherhood.” She added with a big smile, “It could be with multiple poems from different people, you know?” I immediately said “Oh my gosh, mom – THIS IS GREAT!!!” And I wasn’t exaggerating.
Poetry is epic – poetry saves lives. How do I know this? Because it saved my mom’s life!
At 5 years old, my mom’s biggest desire was to die. She had heard judging phrases countless times, like “You deserve to suffer,” or “You shouldn’t even be alive.” Later, she discovered that dismissing, denying, and downplaying our pain makes it worse, but validating different parts of ourselves heals it.
These parts carry rage, shame, fear, and extreme sadness that they needyour help to release. And I know you can give them a voice – through poetry! I call it Parts Poetry. ~ Elayna Fernández
My mom did a TEDx talk in 2024 about her personal journey with suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior. Her goal is to challenge the harmful stereotypes about suicidal thoughts that cause stigma and shame. She goes into detail about Parts Poetry and why poetry is so important! The video is down below.
